Many would describe Fez as the Jerusalem of the Maghreb. Up until 1925, the city of Fez was the capital of the Moroccan Kingdom and retains its prestige as one of the most enchanting and enriching cities in the country. Home to the world’s largest car-free old medinas and the world’s oldest functioning university, it’s no surprise that Fez is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and a must-visit on tourist radars. Fez is an excellent example of medieval Jewish history and heritage, as it was home to Rabbi Isaac Al Fassi and Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimoun, two of the most influential Talmud scholars in the history of Judaism. Rabat, or Ribat Alfath, is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco that lies along the Atlantic coast and the Bouregreg River. the architecture of its buildings is influenced by its Andalusian, Hebraic and French colonial past. Although Salé, Rabat’s neighboring city, had a bigger and deep-rooted Jewish Moroccan community, Rabat became home to several Jewish families migrating from the four corners of Morocco. In 1807, the Sultan Moulay Slimane consolidated the Jews in a separated district and built the Mellah in the far east of the old city of Rabat. He endowed the district of all modern infrastructures: shops, ovens, Hammam, synagogues and even sewers. The visit of Rabat would not be complete without a tour in the alleys of its Mellah, Slat Rabbi Chalom Zaoui, a jewel located at the entrance of the walled quarter and Talmud Torah, the last functioning synagogue of Rabat and the old cemetery where Eliezer Di’avila, the nephew of Or Chaim Hakadosh, is resting. Rabat now has several art galleries and art spaces supported by private foundations. Art is also available in large format, thanks to graffiti artists, invited each year to express themselves on the walls of the capital, aUNESCO certified World Heritage city which is quickly evolving from its sole image as Morocco’s administrative and political hub to cultural capital.

Tangier is located near Cape Spartel, at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean. After the fall of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the first Jews went to Tangier (formerly known as Tanja or Tingus) and resided among the Berbers. During the 1492 Alhambra Decree, the Jews of Tangier were confronted by a second wave of migration from the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula. During WWII, the Jewish community of Tangier made a concerted effort to settle the large number of Eastern European Jews who sought sanctuary in the city. Many artists and authors from America and Europe used it as a meeting spot – and sometimes as a retreat – in the 1950s. Famous literary figures, poets, painters and actors have been drawn to this sea-shaped port city. Tangier, unlike the other Imperial cities in Morocco, did not have a formal Jewish Mellah. Yet, there are multiple synagogues, cemeteries, monuments, and communal organizations which demonstrate the city's historical significance to the Jewish Moroccan population

Essaouira is known as the ‘Wind City of Africa”. This beach-hugging city is visited by hordes of sun-worshipping tourists each year. Shaped by the strong Atlantic wind that blows through its brine-battered alleyways, it has plenty of traditional culture and character to experience. With its 18th-century fortress still circling the city, the place remains almost frozen in time; a proud vestige of Morocco’s prosperous coexistence model. Making up the majority of the city’s population until the 1920s, the thriving and productive Jewish community was deeply integrated into Moroccan society, and the Mellah played an important role in Essaouira’s economic development. Today, A hybrid of Moorish and North African architecture including residential buildings—many with the Star of David carved into the façade—more than a dozen synagogues, a Talmud Torah school, and other buildings are the only physical evidence of centuries of Jewish presence in Essaouira.
